Rally is a form of obedience that involves the dog being at heel whilst navigating a course of numbered signs with various obedience related instructions. A judge preplans the course and at Level 1 (L1) there can be a maximum of 12 signs increasing to 17 signs at L5 and 18 signs at L6. At L1 and L2 dogs compete on a loose lead. At all other levels the dogs are off lead.

Competitors start the course with 200 points and deductions are made by the judge for errors such as a tight lead, out of position and not completing the exercise. Other errors may result in the disqualification of the dog. A score of 175 and over is a qualifying score and over 190 is an excellent score. At L1-4 progression from one level to the next requires three qualifying scores of 190 or better or six qualifying scores of 175. At L5-6 progression from one level to the next requires three qualifying scores of 190 or better or six qualifying scores of 180.
